Select was established in 2000 by James George with the invaluable help of his dad Keith. James had worked during his school holidays alongside his dad on a Smithfield’s Market stall and he decided to stop studying for a degree in advertising and embark on a full time career in the meat industry.
He quickly realised that there was a gap in the marketplace that lay between traditional retail butchers and the huge catering and food service companies.
Select Butchery offers freshly selected cuts as opposed to vacuum packed products: it cuts bespoke for every order, every day.
This approach has proved to be hugely popular with the business growing rapidly over the past 14 years. It has built an enviable customer list that comprises some of the UK’s top restaurants.
Reliable refrigerated transport is a key element of James’ success. His business needs to ensure that customers always receive their orders when they need them.

Amongst the measures that we have put in place to support Select is the provision of dedicated on-site spare vehicles. This has proved to be vitally important in ensuring that if a problem occurs with a vehicle overnight the meat can still be delivered without waiting for an engineer to arrive.
Another innovation has been the development of regular on-site ‘surgeries’. At these a Fridgexpress mobile engineer attends to carry out a routine inspection of the vehicles and rectify any defects that are identified. This has reduced unscheduled call-outs and dramatically improved the reliability of the fleet.
